Tracy (Enfant Jesus School)

1951-1987

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
The parish of Enfant Jesus (Child Jesus) is situated on the south-east shore of the St. Lawrence River. The Marie Auxiliatrice parish is on its north and east sides. "Les Greves" vacation camp is on its south side. On its west side, across the St. Lawrence, are the parishes of Berthier and Lanoraie which are part of the Joliette Diocese. The parish is located in Richelieu County and the Marie Victorin highway passes through the town.

FOUNDING
In 1951, Father Paul-Émile Lavoie, on behalf of the school board asked Mother St. Madeleine of Pazzi (Sara Cordeau), superior general, for some sisters for the convent that was being planned. When two teaching sisters were promised for fall 1951, the school board went ahead with the plan to build a school with six classrooms and with living quarters for the sisters.
On September 6, 1951, a fire destroyed three months of work. The new convent burned down. While the convent was being rebuilt, the sisters lived in the convent at St. Joseph of Sorel and travelled to their work at the school. On April 21, 1952, the sisters took up lodgings in the newly rebuilt convent - a fireproof one this time.
